Here’s a quick look at eight great ice cream joints in Taipei we visited for our Japanese magazine.

CHILDHOOD ICE

Narrow shop with nostalgia items. Been around for decades (50 years?) Shaved ice with fruit (melon/banana/papaya/kiwi), adzuki beans/mung beans/peanuts/taro/egg pudding, and condensed milk. Also papaya milk and soft ice cream with fruit.

KING MANGO

One of the popular mango ice shops on Yongkang Street. Twenty different ice dishes on the menu. Declaring proudly that they served ice at the Presidential Office National Day Banquet in 2015.

CARAMEL PARK

Caramelized ice or ice cream scoops served on fruit (pineapple/honeydew melon) and caramelized ice with tapioca, sweet-potato balls, and herbal jelly; also fresh-fruit juices and smoothies.

KOKOCHI.KOGOSEI

They only have two types of food, “Osmanthus Flower Honey Jiunang Jade Snow Flake Ice” and “Osmanthus Flower Jiunang Egg Sweet Soup (hot)” (jiunang “is a sweet, soup- or pudding-like dish … it consists of a mixture of partially digested rice grains floating in a sweet saccharified liquid ” Wiki). The ice dish consists of a mountain of flaky ice flavored with honey, chewy glutinous-rice balls and jiunang.

ROJI MONSTER

In a modern simplistic Japanese-style building with cute elements.  Unique way of ordering (with cards and stamps). Cute monster-shaped flaky ice. A black round monster sitting at one table. Japanese tatami area on second floor. Lot of different flavors, also coffee and Japanese tea.

EMACK & BOLIO’S

Counter of the US ice cream chain inside Xinyi Eslite (4F). Twenty-four different ice flavors, three different cone flavors.

I-CE PARIS

Rolled ice from France. Ice is flattened on a flat metal surface and then rolled up. The ice comes garnished with all sorts of cookies and nuts. Various fruit flavors, including raspberry, passion fruit, blue berry, and strawberry.

O ROSE

Small shop selling beautiful rose-shaped ice cream. Many different flavors, the ice scoops are crafted into small works of art. Elegant ambiance with red sofa chairs and scenes of Paris on the walls.
